A Change Is Coming
The years 1978 & 1979 are significant in the Rock And Roll Timeline. The first wave of Punk Rock and Alternative were evolving and growing into so much more. Bands like The Talking Heads and Blondie were the Next Wave before The Next Wave was recognized, and alongside Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello and The Police, these bands brought the Next Wave to the mainstream without compromising their sound. We are taking a look at these two years and their significance to what was happening with the New Wave coming because of bands like The Jam, XTC, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, etc. Post Punk going strong because of bands like Gang Of Four, The X-Ray Spex, Generation X, The Stranglers and more. The growth of the Gothic branch with bands like The Damned, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure and Joy Division setting the course for what was ahead. The Second wave of Ska was gaining momentum with the creation of Two-Tone Records and the emergence of The Specials. And, the sound of Hardcore punk because of bands like The Germs were starting to take root in cities across the world. Bands like U2 were emerging from the ashes of punk and creating a fresh new sound. Patti Smith, Kraftwerk and Gary Numan helped facilitate change as well. There was so much happening in Rock And Roll at that time and we give a brief overview of many of the artists who contributed to the changing sounds of music during these two significant years.
